1997 - Cabell County Court House, Huntington, WV

Cabell County was named after William H. Cabell, governor of Virginia, from 1805 to 1808. The Cabell County Court originally met in Barboursville, but was moved to Huntington due to possible threats in the Civil War.

J.B. Stewart was the supervising architect representing the Courthouse. While, J.D. Supart, a Belgian, was superintendent in charge of the erection of the new building. He identified himself in the community and after the completion of the Courthouse, continued in West Virginia as a construction man.

The cornerstone for the courthouse was laid in 1899, with a parade to mark the event. The courthouse was completed in December 1901. The project cost approximately $120,000 and was financed through a levy.

Through the years the expansion of the community caused a need for a larger courthouse. A west wing, made of Berea sandstone, was constructed in 1923. However, this addition was not enough to accommodate the ever growing Cabell County and an east wing was later added.

The Cabell County Courthouse is an essential asset to the community. It is a historical representative of the past as well as an important necessity for the future. It houses all various judicial courts, the county court and all legal documents from birth certificates to business affairs.
