1998 - Stalnaker Hall, West Virginia University, Morgantown, WV

Woman’s Hall was constructed in 1918 at West Virginia University. It was constructed in an effort to accommodate the increasing number of women students. The original hall overlooked the athletic field and housed nearly 200 students.

The main section of the building was completed in 1919 with additional wings added in 1935 expanding its living capacity to 260 students.

Acting University President, Franklin Trotter, advocated the construction of Woman’s Hall. He feared portions of the University might be relocated to other area of the state due to lack of space in Morgantown. Trotter raised $75,000 for the first phase of his building program and put it toward land purchases. With help from the legislature, Woman’s hall was built along with an agricultural building and medical facility.

In 1972, Woman’s Hall was officially renamed Stalnaker Hall in honor of Elizabeth M. Stalnaker, professor emeritus of psychology. She bequeathed nearly $500,000 to West Virginia University in student loans.

In 1991, the building underwent a total renovation that included replacing wood framing with steel in the main center section and completely rebuilding the student rooms throughout. This building provides West Virginia University with modern, accessible spaces for the next century.
